Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, the grandfather of current Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, was very loyal to the British and was handsomely rewarded with several medals and honors. During the gruesome Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he gave aid to the British.
He wrote a letter to the British government and declared that General Dyer’s action (of killing at least 379 unarmed Indians) was approvable and “justified”.
The then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer, fondly remembered this in his autobiography.
Following is a picture of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala with his persoal friend Michael O’Dwyer. London, 1920.
O’Dwyer termed the Jallianwala Bagh Amritsar massacre as “correct action & I approve”. He was later assassinated by Udham Singh.
General Dyer acted on the orders of his boss Michael O’Dwyer. Both of them were family friends of Capt. Amarinder Singh, CM of Punjab & a leader of the Indian National Congress.
